About the Lion King:

An unforgettable story, breathtaking animation, beloved characters and award-winning music sets the stage for “The Lion King”, a Disney classic that follows the adventures of Simba, the feisty lion cub who “just can’t wait to be king.” But his envious Uncle Scar has plans for his own ascent to the throne, and he forces Simba’s exile from the kingdom.

Alone and adrift, Simba soon joins the escapades of a hilarious meerkat named Timon and his warmhearted warthog pal, Pumbaa. Adopting their carefree lifestyle of “Hakuna Matata,” Simba ignores his real responsibilities until he realizes his destiny and returns to the Pride Lands to claim his place in the “Circle of Life.”

The all-star vocal talents—including Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Ernie Sabella, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Robert Guillaume, Cheech Marin and Moira Kelly—rip-roaring comedy and uplifting messages of courage, loyalty and hope make this a timeless tale for all ages. Produced by Don Hahn and directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff from a script by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton, “The Lion King” is rated G by the MPAA.

Goalforit is a FREE, online Goal setting and tracking application. From your everyday “to-do” list, to your child’s chore list, Goalforit allows you to set your goals and manage them easily!

Goal For It was easy to sign up for and once you enter your basic data, you can start setting goals, creating charts, and more! Initially, I was on a mission to create a Chore Chart for Reece and Betsy, but once I was in the application, I was totally surprised at everything it had to offer!

You could choose from creating Chore Charts, Behavior Charts, To-Do List, and setting goals. And then, on your “home page” it lists all the charts you have created, a Goal Tracker, Lists of Goals, etc. It is like having your own little mini planner right in front of you!

So, I finally buckled down and started to create a Chore Chart for Reece. When creating a Chore Chart, the first thing the application does is offer you the option to create a chore chart for “kids” or “tweens & teens”. I like this because my kids are 9 & 11 and I liked the “tweens” option so that I could see Chores geared towards their age level.

Once you pick the age group, you are then asked to name it and pick the time frame of the chart (daily, weekly, monthly, none) and then you pick out a theme for the chart.

Since this is an online tool, I think colors, pictures, and “look” really have a lot to do with whether someone will use the application consistently.  I loved that Goal For It offered numerous categories (including “cute,” “Extreme Sports,” “Basic,” “Black and White,” “Flowers,” which helps personalize the Chore Chart.

GoalForIt

Once you pick out the category (or theme), it is off to selecting what your actual chores will be! But the Chore Chart is not just limited to “chores”. You there are several Areas to choose “activities” from:

Health – Includes activities like “Drink enough water,” “Run,” “Eat some fruit”.

Traits – Includes activities like “Be patient,” “Think Positive,” “Be Focused”.

Fulfillment – Includes activities like “Family Time,” “Read,” Nurture faith”.

Household – Includes activities like “Take trash out,” “Clean house,” “Sweep Floors”.

Can’t find the “activity” you are looking for? Well that’s no problem! You can even  make a Custom activity!

*Activities vary depending if the “tween” or “kid” chore chart is selected.

GoalForIt

My suggestion would be that when you make a Chore Chart for your child, you let them help you pick it out and design it!

Once you select an “activity” you can designate the day of the week (month, etc) the activity should be completed. You will also assign “points” to each activity. Why? Because there is a Reward System as well! You can use your points to buy rewards. These “rewards” are user defined. Some of mine included “Pick out Dinner for the night” and “10 Minute Back Massage by Dad or Mom”.

When you look at the Chore Chart, you then have the ability to start checking things off that have been completed. When you check them off, points are earned! When you earn enough points to buy a reward, you will “purchase” the reward and then an email will be sent indicating the reward.

GoalForIt

This is all FREE!

This is an absolutely fantastic online goal setting application. The only thing I would change is that I could not find a way to link multiple users to one account. For example, if I want Reece to look at his Chore Chart, he has to log in using my login and password. I think it would be more beneficial to have one main user, with other users linked to it.  Otherwise, I think this Goal For It is an awesome product and will definitely continue to use it!

I feel very fortunate to have been able to participate in Kaplan’s Online Tutoring Test Drive along with my son Reece. This was a two month program in which each week Reece would take “tests”. Kaplan’s Online Tutoring begins with an initial assessment of the childs strengths and weaknesses based on their grade level. Those are the “assessment” tests the child takes.

Reece struggled with these assessment tests because a lot of the questions that were presented before him he had not yet seen in 6th grade. He was not “graded” on these tests, but rather, they were used to help determine what the future “tests” would include and these “tests” would then focus on the areas in which Reece needed the most help. When we signed up for the program, Reece was a little over a month into 6th grade. With that being said, I think it might have been helpful, if, instead of having the program entail all of 6th grade curriculum, but maybe break it down by quarter. So that if you sign up in the first semester of 6th grade, you would have different assessment tests than those who sign up in the 3rd quarter of 6th grade.

The next step is to take “tests” each time Reece logged on. Every time he logged on and finished an assignment/test, he would earn “Experience Points” which are used for motivation and that can be used to purchase anything from a toy to a Playstation 3! Initially, when I signed up for this program, I really thought Reece would love the “Experience Points” factor and that would motivate him enough to continue to want to go upstairs and take tests. Although, silly me, he needed more than just “points” to get motivated. He also needed me to tell him it was time to “study”. As great as I think the “Experience Points” are, you must understand, this is not a tool that you can just sit back and your child will be on it everyday. You will also need to help motivate your child. You need to encourage your child verbally as much as the “Experience Points” motivate him materially.

Reece does not struggle in school, but he is not a straight A student either. There are areas that I think he could definitely benefit from being tutored. The struggle we had was finding the time to actually work on the program. Although it is recommended to spend only two hours a week on it, we struggled to find that time and here is the reason why I think. This is a software program. There is no tutor waiting for us, there is no place to drive to, we will never be late. These things combined with an already busy schedule could possibly lead to your child not getting as much out of the program as you would like.

It was my experience, that if we did not schedule the time the week prior, we seemed to find a lot of difficulty in getting the two hours in. And it was only two hours! You, the parent, need to act like the “tutor” in this case. You need to schedule the tutoring time and make sure your child does it. You cannot let things like “I have a headache tonight, I don’t care if you don’t do your tutoring Charlie” get in the way. The 20 minute stop at the grocery store put off the tutoring. You just can’t. You must treat this like a real class, with real times, with real consequences if the “tests” are not taken.

I know Reece does not like it when he feels like he lets teachers down. But do you think he cares if he lets a software program down? A software program cannot be the only thing motivating your child and setting the class times. You, as the parent, must do it and stick to it. I have to admit, there were times I let it slide because it was not formally “scheduled”. That is why I believe if you are going to do this program, that you know you must be involved. With that being said, I absolutely believe Kaplan’s Online Tutoring does a great job in assessing the student initially, and then working on their weaknesses.

I watched Reece take a few of the “tests” to see how his progress was going, and it was very interactive, easy to read, with “picture” breaks telling the kids they are “half way done,” “almost done,” etc so that the child knew where he stood when taking the test and how much farther he had to go.

When I log on to see Reece’s progress, I can either choose a selected time frame to see his progress or look at the entire program. But it goes deeper than that. It is broken down by Reading and Math and then further broken down using colors to show you what skills have been mastered, what is in progress, what has not yet been started, and what has not been mastered.

Look at the graph below:

You can see based on the green color that Reece has mastered one skill (green), is currently working on one skill (yellow) and has not yet started on one skill (white). The reports are easy to use and easy to understand.

If I were to choose an online tutoring program, I absolutely would choose Kaplan’s Online Tutoring program.

End Childhood Obesity! Vote for Break Pal and get a FREE PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTION TO BREAKPAL!!!

From BreakPal:

“As I’m sure you are aware, childhood obesity is a huge problem in this country. And now with the economic conditions, can you believe Physical Education is being cut in schools across the country.

Did you know that because of the childhood obesity epidemic, it is predicted that today’s children will be the first generation with a shorter lifespan than their parents?

Not only is reduced physical activity affecting children’s health, but it also affects their learning ability. They just don’t learn well unless they are getting exercise. The body and the brain work together.

Teachers are telling me that when the kids don’t get the physical release of energy from exercise, they struggle at learning. There’s a lot of scientific evidence to back this.

However, some teachers have experimented with our fitness app, Break Pal, in the classroom. We’ve offered it to them at no charge to see how it worked out in the classroom.

They are reporting significant success. They simply project the exercise on the overhead projector and take a few breaks during classroom time for the micro-workouts.

A teacher in Texas who teaches a special ed class has especially seen great results with this. The kids are much more focused if they get in exercise during their studies. They get through their studies faster with the increased focus levels.

We also have a few test cases starting in classrooms in the Bay Area. The teachers are very excited about it and feel it can really help their students not only get in better physical shape (As you know childhood obesity is rampant) but also to help them learn by keeping them more focuses.

Obviously it works. But it’s hard to get the word out.

Right now we are a finalist in First Lady Michelle Obama’s “apps for healthy kids” contest. This contest has been highly publicized and is being promoted by the White House and the USDA.

If we win, the First Lady will help us spread Break Pal to classrooms across the country. We can literally helps millions of children and people who work at desks.

Our application is the only one to integrate exercise into the day and also teach about nutrition.

I’m going to give out a premium version to anyone who votes for our app. They just have to contact me and tell me they voted and I’ll give them a premium account. No catch. A free premium account and a thank you for voting.

It takes less than 90 seconds to vote.
