With U Star Personalized Classics, the plot remains the same, the only thing that changes is that it could be you following the yellow brick road, or your brother hunting vampires in the darkest depths of Transylvania, or your best friend starring in one of the best-loved romances of all time alongside her own Mr. Darcy!”
I was really excited to see one of these books. I decided to go ahead and use Betsy as “Dorothy” in The Wizard of Oz. I had the opportunity to choose other people to be the other main characters (the Tin Man, The Lion, Scare Crow and The Wicked Witch of the West) but I didn’t. The only other character I named was Toto. I made Maggie, one of our dogs, “Toto”. Although I am pretty sure she would have gotten a kick out of it if I was the Wicked Witch of the West.

When I got the book – I really thought it was so cool to look through the pages and see Betsy’s name where Dorothy’s used to be…and of course Toto was now Maggie. Because I think this is such an awesome gift, I am going to wait until Christmas to give it to Betsy. However, my son did read it and he was upset to say the least. He wanted to be a star of a novel. So I broke down and told him I would buy him one for Christmas as well, but he really would have to wait until Christmas to get it.

You know that when your child wants the same gift as another child, especially a book, it has to be a great gift. But U Star Novels doesn’t stop at the Classics. No! You can even personalize your own Romantic novel to include yourself and your significant other. Isn’t that cool?

Their Personalized Classic Novels include:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
A Christmas Carol
Pride and Prejudice
The Hounds of Baskerville
Romeo and Juliet
Dracula
Emma
Jane Eyre
Treasure Island
Wind In The Willows
Frankenstein
Little Women
Great Expectations
Importance Of Being Earnest

U Star Novels can be purchased here for 24.95. The processing and shipping time were outstanding. Between the time it took me to order the book and receive it, it took less a week! That is great considering they are personalizing it!

I love to cook, it is such a pleasure to spend time making a meal and then hearing one of my kids say “Wow! That was good” or ask me to cook a meal they already tasted and liked. That is one of the big reasons I am including Cook Books in my Gift Guide. And the Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook by Woodrow Wilson is a cook book for anyone!

About Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook:

“Got champagne taste and a beer budget? Here’s the cookbook for you. A great meal doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. For the cost of burgers out, you can dine on filet mignon at home. The Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook shows the way. This small volume is full of recipes simple enough they’re a joy to cook, and tasty enough they’re a joy to eat. Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, or having the boss over for the first time, you’ll be proud to serve from this fine cookbook.

Enjoy restaurant quality meals without the quality restaurant prices. One meal eaten in rather than eaten out pays for the book. With the money you save cooking with The Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook, you could serve filet mignon every night. Better yet, the money you won’t be spending will add up as fast as an executive’s paycheck. Best of all, the government hasn’t figured out how to tax these benefits…yet.

Serve something fancy, like pork medallions stuffed with bleu cheese or onion-stuffed sirloin. Serve something basic like meatball stew or pot roast. Serve something great every time.

The Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook is about more than just eating well and saving money. With instructions like “marinate significant other, set aside” and “open the beer, drink half” Wilson puts fun back into the kitchen.”

There were several recipes I wanted to try in this book, but I decided on Tex Mex Spaghetti. Why? I wanted to see a “hyped” up version of my usual spaghetti. Weird as this sounds, spaghetti is not one of the fan favorites in my house. I don’t know, maybe because I make it using such a basic recipe there is nothing too it I guess.

What added the “Champagne” quality of this recipe I think is that included Garlic Cloves, Cumin, Chili Powder, and corn as some of the ingredients. Ummm…that is definitely a leap from what I normally put in my spaghetti (I told you, my spaghetti is B.O.R.I.N.G!). So how did it turn out?

Well, let’s just say there was NONE left at the end of dinner! If that doesn’t say something about a recipe, nothing will.

If you are looking for recipes that “normal” but then add a twist to them to make them taste more like something you would get in a restaurant, this is a great cookbook. The only thing I was bummed about was that there were no Dessert Recipes.

Great Gift For: Men, Women, Anyone who likes to cook.

Champagne Taste/Beer Budget Cookbook can be purchased online here or on Amazon for 12.95. Or, if you would like to order wholesale, click here.

When at the end of the first chapter of a book you are laughing out loud, you know you are in for a treat of a book. And that is exactly what Bad to the Bone – Memoirs of a Rebel Doggie Blogger is – a treat…and no all you doggie bloggers reading this, not a treat you can eat!

Bo, the Doggie Blogger who wrote the book, is a Golden Retriever Mix who was rescued from an Animal Shelter and the book details his life with his parents, his cat room mate Moose, and dog buddy Cooper and there was not one, not one, chapter I did not find myself laughing out loud when I read it.

About Bo:

“Let’s get this clear right away: I’m a dog. I’m 1’10″ and weigh 63 lbs, and although I’m a mutt on the outside, I’m a purebred on the inside. My good nature comes from the Golden Retriever side of the family, while my stubbornness is clearly from my Chowchow bloodlines. I’ve got Rastafarian ears, a black tongue for licking, and paws that should be on a dog twice my size.

I type 60 words a minute.

My name is Bo, and this is my story.

From shelter dog reject to beloved pet and popular doggie blogger, Bo Hoefinger’s life has been anything but ordinary. Join this incorrigible canine as he welcomes us into his life, complete with his wacky “parents,” a constipated feline housemate, and chipmunk warfare. “

This is probably the best book I have read about the antics of a dog and from the dogs point of view. For a dog, Bo has better writing skills than most people. His stories are so detailed they will make you laugh out loud. I found myself reading parts of this book out loud to my husband (and anybody else who would listen) because I thought they were so funny. When I was through with the book I took it over to my Dad’s and told him he HAD to read this it was so funny.

From thinking he was adopted out of “revenge” or playing catch with a squirrel (literally) this book will keep you in stitches if you have ever owned a dog that is not perfect. But it is not just a book about his antics, it is about his life and the changes he goes through, moving, with silly, sometimes clumsy, parents, his adventures with standing up for Moose (his room mate) against the neighborhood bully cat and so much more.

Honestly, if a dog was going to talk, this is what it would be like. With the manipulating of the “parents,” the coolness of a dog that sleeps 15 hours a day, only to want to wake up and walk his parents. I could totally relate to the stories Bo told in this book. I mean it was like Bo took on the personality of my dog Rosie and it was Rosie telling these stories not Bo.

Clearly, this is definitively high up on my list of greatest books. And I am not joking. I would read this book over and over just to laugh.

Great Gift For: Anyone who has ever had a dog.

I will tell you what…If you told me that using ten minutes of my day would help me feel more aware of my surroundings, focus more on the little things in life, and mediatate I would probably… laugh in your face. Ten Minutes? What’s 10 minutes? 600 seconds? That is nothing! So I was really excited when I was given the opportunity to review The Next Ten Minutes written by Andrew Peterson.

Although a little hesitant, I was thinking there was no way 10 Minutes (600 seconds!) would make a difference in my life. NO WAY. But I really wanted to try because I don’t know about you, but my life sometimes feels overwhelming. I mean, think about it.

What is a good day for me?

5:00 am – Wake up and work on blog
6:30 am – Start real job
7:30 am – Get dressed and get kids off to school
8:30 – Back to real job
3:30 – Stop working, kids get home from school
4:30 Start cooking dinner
5:45 – Leave for football practice
8:30 – Get home from football practice
9:00 – Kiss my kids goodnight and back to working on blog until I can’t keep my eyes open anymore.

This is my schedule 3 out of 5 of the weekdays. Thursday is worse because both my kids have karate and are at different levels, so different classes which happen to start at 5:30 – meaning I have to leave my house at 5:15!!! Now, this is truly an overwhelming schedule for me and honestly, as much as Reece loves football, I cannot wait for it to be over!

Throw in a wrench like the bills, the health of family members, the dogs chewing something up and you can see the the word “overwhelming” doesn’t even come close to what I feel. Sometimes I feel like if I tip the wrong way one day I am going to fall off this tightrope I call life. And this is where The Next ten Minutes comes in.

About The Next Ten Minutes:

“The desire to discover meaning in our lives is a powerful motivator for many people. Some turn to psychotherapy and counseling for help, some turn to spiritual teachings, and many turn to both. The Next Ten Minutes is the guide to help us discover the seeds of transformation and meaning in even the most ordinary routines. The Next Ten Minutes consists of a collection of exercises originally created for use in Dr. Peterson’s successful counseling practice. Rather than taking readers out of the everyday, Dr. Peterson invites them to move more deeply into the familiar tasks of ordinary life, such as turning simple breathing, eating, physical love, or throwing out the trash into meditative exercises that can transform your day. Based on both Buddhist philosophy and proven psychology techniques, these succinct and accessible meditations also offer simple and effective methods for therapeutic counseling and personal growth. The power to seize the day is but a few simple steps away. “

Really? Ten Minutes? Really? Everyday activities? Yes to both of those. I loved this book for several reasons. This is not your typical self help book in that you read one chapter after another. No. In this book, you can go from activity to activity to activity in no particular order. And when Mr. Peterson says these are every day activities, he means it. I really hate to admit this, but my trash can is always the fullest on the street on trash day. I mean, over flowing full. How come no one elses is like that? This is a question that has been on my mind a lot, but it is in my head and then it is gone…woops…another thought flew in. So as I was deciding which activity to try first, guess what activity 6 is? You got it – Throw Something Away.

And how, pray tell, is throwing something away going to 1) Make me more aware? and 2) Take ten minutes? Very easily. The purpose of this exercise is not to make you feel bad about how little you recycle, or that, God Forbid, make you feel that you must recycle everything because in all actuality, that piece of trash is not recyclable and it really is trash no matter how hard you try to recycle it.

Mr. Peterson takes us through an exercise of examining a real piece of trash, what was it’s history? Was a tree cut down for it? Out of what forest? What does the future hold for this piece of trash? How long will it sit in a pile at the dump? It is with these thoughts that we are creating a deeper focus, a type of meditation on this little piece of trash and its life cycle. We are then instructed to give the trash a funeral, show our appreciation for the work it played in our house and acknowledge that all things must die. And then, finally, we throw it away. We release that piece of trash. What a simple act after the deep thinking we were just doing.

But then Mr. Peterson says we can take it further by adding other activities like keeping a garbage log, practicing deep reuse – can this item be used again for something?, become an amateur “Garbologist” by talking a walk and examining all the trash on the roads, and finally, practice anticipatory decomposition – shred your important papers before throwing them out. deeper activity.

Now, my summation of the Trash Exercise is not nearly as detailed as Mr. Peterson’s and to get the full effect of the exercise, it is best to read it in his words. But I will tell you this much. I know when I throw something away now, I do think about it, even if I do have to actually release it and really throw it away.

The Next Ten Minutes is full of exercises like these meant to help you “Seize the Moment,” notice your day, make you aware of your every day surroundings, and maybe, just maybe, allow you to grow a little.

Great Gift For: Anyone who enjoys looking for a little more personal insight!

The Next Ten Minutes is being released this October and can be purchased here for 17.99.

I am not one of those people who shy away from books. I love reading and I love reading all sorts of books, from the classics like Anna Karenina to the Twilight Series I am a very versatile reader. And I LOVE to read. When I find a good book and I get into the groove of reading it, I will seriously put off housecleaning, watching TV, everything practically to keep reading. I am also one of those readers who again, likes “adult” books, but also books that are geared towards a younger audience than myself. For example, I absolutely love and cherish the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I bought all seven novels and read them one right after the other. I also have the yearning to read them again and again. Some books just do that to you.

And I was lucky enough to read another book that I love and have every intention of reading over and over. It is also a book that my son has started reading and will not put down! My daughter is impatiently waiting her turn. What book? It is called, “Traegonia – The Sunbow Prophecy” written by K.S. Krueger and Illustrated by Dino C. Crisanti.

About Traegonia – The Sunbow Prophecy

“Do you believe in Fairies, Sprites, Elves or Gnomes? Just because we cannot see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist…Welcome to The World of Traegonia where mystical things really do happen.

Close your eyes, hold out your hand and allow the spirit of the Sunbow Prophecy to draw you into a place you have never been before. Meet a community of unknown beings who are the protectors of the Earth. See how they bring hope to a seemingly hopeless situation, a home to those who are at risk of losing theirs and a voice to creatures who cannot speak for themselves. Watch as three young friends work together to bring about change. No matter how big or how small one is, belief and passion can change the world. Choose to see the beauty in that which is different. Put aside the fear of what you do not understand and you just may find something truly special in the gifts that others hold. What they have to share could just be the thing to change our lives, or maybe even our world.

Do You Believe?”

The book had me hooked from the first chapter. Half way through the book I thought “This book reminds me of another book, what book?” and it did not take me long to make the connection. This book reminded me of the Chronicles of Narnia series. Not, the story line of course, but in the whimsical, fantasy like nature of the book. The details of the characters, how they looked and spoke – you could see them when you closed your eyes. You could feel their fear, their joy, their sadness. The beauty of the descriptive paragraphs truly had me feeling like I was watching a movie while reading it, or sometimes, that I was sitting on a treetop in Traegonia watching the story below me unfold.

But beyond the wonderful descriptions of everything was the point of the story. A group of friends that were able to work together as a team for a cause they believed in. This story, although fantasy like in some of the characters, took a current day event (clearing out a forest to make a shopping center) and combines fantasy and current events together to bring us a wonderful, uplifting story of belief and friendship. What can you accomplish when you believe in yourself or in things that may not be visible? What can you accomplish when you work together as a group for the good of the earth? Friendship can occur in places you did not expect and then flourish when loyalty, faith, and dedication come into the picture.

Absolutely a wonderful book. I really cannot say enough good things about this book. The antagonist in this book is not some horrifically scary creature, so it is not a scary book to read. It just tells a great story, from beginning to end, about believing in yourself, in your fellow humans, as well as belief in things you may not see. I would highly recommend this book for anyone. The beautiful creatures are not so “syrupy” that only girls would like this book and the book has enough fantasy and adventure that boys would like this book as well.

Like I said, my son who is 11 is reading this book and is thoroughly enjoying it and my 8 year old is waiting. Betsy reads at a 5th grade level though, so I think to be safe, if you buy this book for anyone under 9 you ought to help them read it. Although, believe me, you will enjoy yourself as you read this book to your children!

But Traegonia is so much more than a place in a book. It is a World. A world of fun, of contests, of sculpted characters, of t-shirts and bookmarks, of sightings! You really should check out the World Of Traegonia website.

Now, I am not a teacher by any means, but you know what I think is AWESOME? The World of Traegonia offers a Study Guide for The World of Traegonia The Sunbow Prophecy. And this is not some sheet of paper that says “Here answer these questions”. Oh No! It is a full blown Study Guide for grades 4 and up. And boy, if I was a kid and was given the opportunity to study this book I would be a happy camper. So please teachers reading this, check out their FREE Study Guide and consider including it in your lesson plans.

Great Gift For: Boys & Girls, Teachers, Anyone who likes to read

Traegonia The Sunbow Prophecy can be purchased here starting at 9.99.

Celebrate Advent

Celebrate Advent – 25 Legends and Ornaments was written by Judith Vicary Swisher and illustrated by Nancy Baayis and is just what it sounds like – A compilation of legends from around the world celebrating the birth of the Christ child with matching paper ornaments.

Enjoy each day of Advent by sharing a story with your family and then finish the story by hanging the ornament in your house or on your tree. At the end of the season, you can then place the ornaments in the pocket at the end of the book so that you can enjoy this book and Advent Calendar every year.

I was lucky enough to read these legends straight through and now I can’t wait to share them with my children during Advent. Children learn about the worldwide messages of love, devotion, sharing, and humble gifts for the coming of the Christ Child. Surely to become a Christmas Classic, I know this is a book I will be reading every year with my children during Advent. I absolutely loved the legends, the illustration is beautiful, and the ornaments are adorable.

About Judith Vicary Swisher -

“Judith Vicary Swisher is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and The Pennsylvania State University. She is a Professor Emerita of Biobehavioral Health and the author of numerous professional articles. More recently she has written several holiday books for children and families. The first, “The Last Ornament”, was published in 2006 [and reprinted in 2010], followed by “Celebrate Advent- 25 Legends”, in 2008.

Great Gift For: Families, Kids, Teachers, Preschools, Churches, Hospitals, Shelters, and many more.

You can buy it on Amazon. Retails for approximately 21.00.

A Christmas Gift Book

All I can say is “WOW – What a book.” I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this book. It is my opinion that if you are a teacher, a parent, a student, a counselor, any one, in fact, that works with kids, you need this book.

But before I get into how I really feel about this book (like I didn’t already tell you), I will give you the editorial information first. The Christmas Gift was written by R. William Bennett, who resides with his family in Utah, has lived on both the East and West Coasts. A former executive at IBM and FranklinCovey, Bennett is an accomplished leader, speaker, teacher, and writer. THE CHRISTMAS GIFT is his first book. He is working on several other books, both fiction and
non-fiction. All I have to say to Mr. Bennett is KEEP WRITING!

About The Christmas Gift:

“The Christmas Gift is a wonderful book that will touch you, change you, and inspire you.” –Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

“Bennett has given us a marvelous story that illuminates the possibilities that come from giving a little understanding and what compassion could do to change our world. He has given us a lasting gift.” –Ron McMillan, co-author, Crucial Conversations

The Christmas Gift is the tale of a young man who, in his effort to stand up for the victim of a bully, becomes the bully’s new daily target. Eventually, having been humiliated and tormented beyond his limits, the young man lashes out and manages to cut to the core of the bully’s heart. While attaining near hero status in his school, he is troubled by his conscience. To the complete bewilderment of some around him, he decides to make an apology. What results is a unique relationship between these two most unlikely of friends. This friendship, built on understanding and forgiveness, becomes the rock upon which the two boys rely when faced with a crisis that will change them, and generations after them, forever.”

My Opinion:

As a mom of a son who has been bullied, this story is close to my heart. I honestly could not put this book down. Easy enough for most students to read (I am going to guess age 10 or up, maybe 9 if they enjoy reading), but written well enough that adults will also enjoy it, I never put this book down once I started. I read it in one sitting. Yes, it was that good in my opinion. Maybe it is because I can relate to the kids in the book, or maybe because I know somewhere in school there is a “Ben” and a “Scott” and I wonder if they found each other yet.

Although a great gift for any student, teacher, or parent during the holiday season, I will have to say that this book could help all year long. I have not yet seen this book advertised anywhere, but I would hope that the marketing people would ensure that just because this book has “Christmas” in the title, that it is not just marketed as a Christmas book – Because it is year round book in my opinion.

Great Gift For: Students, Teachers, Counselors, Churches, and so many more!

The Christmas Gift Can be purchased on Amazon for approximately 14.95.

And you know what’s good for you? I have one of these books to giveaway!!!
